Artist: Michael Kaplan Important Added Info: Note that this poster (known in the hobby as the "psychedelic eye" style, and the most valuable and desirable 1970s movie poster there is) is one of two special wilding posters created for the 1970 re-launch of this movie by Mike Kaplan, who was 2001's marketing point man, which adopted a completely different ad campaign, and a new tagline, "the ultimate trip". These two posters were conceived by Mr. Kaplan, and when the movie was given its 70mm (with full stereo sound, correct lenses, etc.) re-launch in March 1970, Mr. Kaplan had many examples of these two posters printed, and they were used in New York City, where they were posted on walls and building sites all over New York City just prior to the movie's release (this was called "wildposting" in 1970, but nowadays it is called "wilding"). We have created a webpage that gives the full history of this re-launch and these two posters (as related to us by Mike Kaplan himself!), and you can read that history HERE What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. The poster was never folded and it had paper loss and tears in the upper right border that extended a little bit into the blue background. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. All that was needed was to give the poster to a competent movie poster restorer, and it would have looked wonderful after restoration. Very unfortunately, the poster was instead given to an individual who specializes in backing non-movie posters, and he backed it onto a paper backing. Our consignor rightfully said that he had asked to have it linenbacked, and the restorer said they could remove it from the paper backing and mount it onto linen. That was where things went terribly wrong. Apparently, they had great trouble removing the poster from the paper backing, and it acquired many creases and tears around the edges, with some scattered in the image. They then compounded their mistake by mounting it onto linen pretty much "as is". From a reasonable viewing distance, the poster displays pretty well, although you see slight signs of the above defects. But when you get close to it, you see the many defects scattered throughout, and when you look very closely at it, you can see ALL the defects. For the right person, who just wants a wonderful poster to display on their wall from a reasonable viewing distance, this poster can be perfect for them. But please read all of the above very carefully and look closely at our super-sized image before bidding on this poster. Learn More about condition grades
