Eisenstein Russian biographical historical 13th century medieval knight war action melodrama ("With original musical score by Prokofieff"; Eisenstein staged the battle sequences to match the wonderful Prokofieff music) starring Aleksandra Danilova, Nikolai Cherkasov (in the title role as Aleksandr Nevsky), Nikolai Okhlopkov, Andrei Abrikosov, and Dmitri Orlov. Note that this classic movie was first released in the U.S. in 1939, and then in just a few countries in the 1940s and then to the rest of the world over the 1950s and 1960s. Because virtually none of the posters are dated, it is very difficult to tell what is from the first release, but ANY first release posters for this classic movie are incredibly rare! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Sydney Newman Important Added Info: Note that, as noted above, first release posters from this classic Eisenstein movie are beyond rare. We don't know that we have ever auctioned any first release posters from any country, until now, when we were consigned this wonderful set of three posters printed for the Canadian premiere on May 1, 1939, at the "Hollywood Theatre" in Toronto, Ontario. There is a 13 1/4" x 33 1/2" poster, plus two that measure 5 3/4" x 13 1/2", and all three were designed by Sydney Newman, who was a Canadian film and TV producer who started out as a still photographer and poster artist (he created these posters when he was just 22). In 1938, he had gone to Hollywood and was offered a job by Walt Disney, but he was unable to get a work permit to stay in the U.S., and he had to turn the job down, which caused him to return to Canada and create these posters! He decided he wanted to work in the film industry itself making movies instead of making posters and taking photographs, and he became a film editor in Canada, where he edited over 350 movies! In the 1950s, he moved to England, where he had a long and distinguished career, and he is surely best remembered for creating two of the greatest cult hit English TV shows ever, "Doctor Who" and "The Avengers"! Note that it is highly unlikely that very many posters were printed for this premiere showing of this movie, and it is even less likely that many, if any, others survive, and these three posters may well be the only surviving examples! Condition: very good. On the 13 1/4" x 33 1/2" poster, there is separation at the left end of the top and bottom horizontal folds and in the top and bottom of the vertical fold, and very minor wear on the folds, with some creases and faint smudges at the crossfolds. On the two small posters, they are folded down the middle. One has smudges in the bottom left white background area and both have a few faint creases. Overall, all three posters have survived in about as nice condition as one could have hoped. Learn More about condition grades
