An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 47 1/4" x 63" [120 x 160 cm]) (Learn More) Felicie Nanteuil, the 1945 Marc Allegret French stage acting romantic melodrama (adapted from the novel by Anatole France by director Allegret; about a second rate ugly actor who discovers a beautiful girl who wants to be an actress and has great acting ability; he wants to be her mentor and take credit for her success, and he has romantic aspirations as well, but she quickly sees the truth of the situation and is drawn to a handsome Count, played by Louis Jourdan; the story is a sort of combination of Pygmalion and Cyrano de Bergerac, and it has a tragic ending) starring Claude Dauphin, Micheline Presle (in the title role as Felice Nanteuil), Louis Jourdan, Jacques Louvigny, Macelle Praince, and Marion Malville. It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. Note that director Marc Allegret is a well respected French director who also helped discover great French actresses including Jeanne Moreau, Simone Simon and Brigitte Bardot. But Allegret's reputation and his career might have been far different, but for exceedingly bad luck with this movie. It was completed in 1942, right before the Nazis occupied France, and it likely would have had no trouble being released in Occupied France (because it was a historical drama with no political implications), but star Claude Dauphin joined the French Resistance, so the Nazis banned the movie, and it was not released until after the war ended in June of 1945. Marcel Carne's Children of Paradise had premiered three months before, and that movie also was about stage acting and a tragic romantic triangle, and no doubt that hurt the reputation of this movie (and unknowing people might have thought Allegret had drawn inspiration from Children of Paradise!). One wonders what would have happened had this movie been released in 1942! As it stands, the movie is mostly only remembered by major film buffs. Perhaps it will be "rediscovered" one day. Not only that, we have never before auctioned ANY movie paper from this movie! Also note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie! Note that this is an extremely rare French poster from the end of World War II! Virtually no French posters survive from the mid 1940s or earlier. There were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all posters from before World War II, and also from during the war, and the first few years afterwards!
