An Unfolded North Korean Special Poster (measures 19" x 30" [48 x 76 cm]) (Learn More) The 13th World Festival of Youth and Students was a 1989 international event, organized by the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), a United Nations-recognized international youth non-governmental organization. It was held in Pyongyang, North Korea and lasted 8 days. The event took four years of preparation by the North Korean government, which effectively spent a quarter of the country's yearly budget on it, and they built elaborate stadiums and undertook other expensive architectural projects. Ultimately declared as the largest ever World Festival of Youth and Students, about 22,000 people from 177 countries took part in the festival, including 100 people from the United States. Many saw the event as a competitive reaction to the Seoul Olympics games (it also undermined previous reconciliation efforts between North and South Korea), and hosting had long lasting consequences for the North Korean government and its worldwide standing. After funneling billions of dollars into the festival production, North Korea ended up owing five billion dollars in foreign debt and was considered bankrupt by creditor nations.
