An Original Vintage Herald (measures 4 3/4" x 7 3/4" [12 x 20 cm]; 4 pages) (Learn More)

a local theater herald advertising the complete program for the week of February 28st, 1932 at the Capital Theatre in South River, New Jersey, comprised of the following movies: Dance Team, the 1932 Sidney Lanfield musical romantic comedy ("They tried to side-step love! Juyst two kids, kidding themselves that they wanted success more than they wanted each other!") starring James Dunn, Sally Eilers, Ralph Morgan, Minna Gombell, and Edward Crandall AND A House Divided (also released as "The Woman Breaker"), the 1931 William Wyler family relationship father/son romantic love triangle melodrama (a wild story of an old widower with a grown son who sends for a mail order bride, and gets one the age of his son, and that causes tension, and the father and son fight, and the father can't walk again, and the wife stays to take care of the father, even though she loves the son, and at the film's climax, she runs away with the son, and the crippled father chases them in a boat and is drowned) starring Walter Huston, Douglass Montgomery (billed as "Kent Douglass"), Helen Chandler, Walter Brennan, Vivien Oakland, and Frank Hagney. Note that the title of this movie, of course, comes from Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, where he said "A house divided against itself will not stand"! AND Nice Women, the 1931 Edwin H. Knopf romantic comedy ("Sister against sister in a battle of love... and a whole family turned topsy-turvy"; "See them all - and more - ") starring Sidney Fox, Frances Dee, Alan Mowbray, Lucile Gleason, Russell Gleason, and James Durkin AND Charlie Chan's Chance, the 1932 John G. Blystone detective crime mystery thriller (based on the novel by Earl Derr Biggers; in this entry, which was Oland's third appearance as Chan, he is attending a police convention in New York City; someone tries to kill him, and there are police detectives from both New York City and Scotland Yard trying to find the would-be killer, but of course, Chan gets there first) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Linda Watkins, H.B. Warner, Alexander Kirkland, Marian Nixon, and Ralph Morgan. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! In the case of this movie, it literally can't be seen, because it is considered "lost", as there are likely no surviving prints of it. Note that this herald also includes a preview for the next week, Lady with a Past!
