This poster features Ludwig Hohlwein art of man blowing a trumpet. Schutzpolizei des Reiches was the State protection police of most cities and large towns in Nazi Germany. Policemen had to have previous military service, good physical and mental health, be of Aryan descent, and be members of the Nazi Party. Officers also had to be members of the SS. The Winterhilfswerk des Deutschen Volkes (Winter Relief of the German People, commonly known by its abbreviated form Winterhilfswerk or WHW), was an annual drive by the Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt (National Socialist People's Welfare) to help finance charitable work. Its slogan was "None shall starve or freeze". The drive was originally set up under the government of Heinrich Bruning in 1931, though Adolf Hitler would later claim sole credit. It ran from 1933-1945 during the months of October through March and was designed to provide food, clothing, coal and other items to less fortunate Germans during the inclement months. Ludwig Hohlwein was a German artist from the 1890s until his passing in 1949. He is one of the best known German poster artists (though his reputation suffered because of his work with the Nazis)! Initially an architect student who illustrated for newspapers, he went on to design book decorations, booklets, and advertising posters. He joined the Nazi Regime in 1933 after refusing an offer to emigrate to the United States, and created government program posters as well as advertisements for the 1936 Munich Olympics. Poster historian Alain Weill says "Hohlwein was the most prolific and brilliant German posterist of the 20th century. Beginning with his first efforts, Hohlwein found his style with disconcerting facility. It would vary little for the next forty years. The drawing was perfect from the start, nothing seemed alien to him, and in any case, nothing posed a problem for him. His figures are full of touches of color and a play of light and shade that brings them out of their background and gives them substance". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Ludwig Hohlwein Important Added Info: Note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: very good. The poster was never folded. The right blank border is darkened, and there is tape on the back of that area, but the tape did not cause the darkening. There is a tape stain in the center of the bottom border. Other than the above, the poster is in nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
