Date Sold 8/28/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Autographed Letter (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm]) (Learn More) Sydney Earl "Tommy" Chaplin was an actor from the 1950s to the 1970s. He was the second son of Charlie Chaplin and Lita Grey, and his mother called him "Tommy" due to her distaste for his father's half-brother Sydney, after whom he had been officially named. After his parents bitter divorce, he and his brother Charles were raised by their mother and maternal grandmother until the mid-1930s, when they began to make frequent visits to their father. Some of his movies include: Ho!, A Countess From Hong Kong, Four Girls in Town, and Limelight. He passed away in 2009 at the age of 82 due to complications from a stroke. Important Added Info: Note that this item has been personally autographed (signed) by Sydney Chaplin! It is a letter from Mr. Chaplin on his company stationery to fellow actress Alice Calhoun. He says he is enclosing a "letter that might interest you". That letter (which is included in this auction) is a letter than Mr. Chaplin received from one of his fans, Clara Weinberg, who in addition to telling Mr. Chaplin how much she likes him, she adds "I am so glad to hear that Miss Alice Calhoun is playing opposite you. I think she is the dearest girl on Earth..." Obviously, Mr. Chaplin thought Miss Calhoun would enjoy reading this rave review about her from a fan! So this auction includes the Sydney Chaplin letter, which is signed by him, and the fan letter (and the envelope it was originally mailed in). Note that this item was consigned to us by a man who was a major movie memorabilia dealer from the 1980s on. During that time, he would regularly purchase collections of movie memorabilia from both dealers and collectors, and in some of those collections he purchased autographed items, and over the years he did not re-sell any of the autographed items. Now he has gathered up together all of his autographed items and consigned them to us. So all of the items from this consignor we are auctioning were purchased by this dealer from longtime dealers and collectors, and we feel it is quite likely that the autograph on this item is authentic! As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: very good.
