A Set of 188 Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] English Movie Stills (Learn More) Jew Suss (released in the U.S. as "Power"), the 1934 Lothar Mendes English anti-Semitism historical melodrama (set in 1730 in the Jewish ghetto of Wurtenburg, Germany; about a brilliant Jewish man who rises from the ghetto to become the right hand man of the Prince, but they have a falling out, and he is persecuted for being Jewish, and at the end, he discovers he is not actually Jewish, but he states that he is Jewish anyway, which leads to his doom) starring Conrad Veidt (in the title role as Joseph 'Jew Suss' Oppenheimer), Benita Hume, Frank Vosper, Cedric Hardwicke, and Gerald du Maurier (a very distinguished British stage actor who appeared in a handful of silent movies from 1917 to 1920, and in a handful of sound movies in the early to mid 1930s; he is the father of author Daphne du Maurier). Note that the movie had a very limited release in the U.S. in 1934 as "Power", because it was perceived as anti-Semitic, even though it was actually very much the opposite (there is an amazing bit of dialog where a friend of Veidt's tells him that there is no more anti-Semitism, saying "But it's 1730! anti-Jewish sentiment is a thing of the past!", and Veidt replies "No, my friend, they will be against us in 1830, and in 1930, too")! Also note that this movie was remade by the Nazis in 1940 as "Jud Suss", and the story was twisted so as to make it one of the most vile anti-Semitic films ever made. Important Added Info: Note that these ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY EIGHT stills, which are "country of origin" stills for this English movie, represent an incredible "find". First release posters from this movie (which, as noted above, is NOT the vile anti-Semitic Nazi version from 1940, but the 1934 Lothar Mendes English version) have always been incredibly rare. We have auctioned three jumbo lobby cards over the years, Swedish and Belgian posters, and heralds. We have never auctioned an 11" x 14" lobby card, and we have auctioned two individual U.S. stills, which auctioned for $86 and $45. But now we have been consigned this remarkable collection of 188 English stills! Many of them (but not all) have a large stamp on the back that reads "'JEW SUSS' A GAUMONT-BRITISH PICTURE. DIRECTED BY LOTHAR MENDES. PRODUCED AT SHEPHERD'S BUSH, LONDON. COPYRIGHT PHOTO." Many (but not all) have a second stamp on the back from the "National Film Archive". A few have snipes glued to the back describing the scene on the front. There are many great portraits of the stars of the movies, with lots and lots of stills with Conrad Veidt in the lead role and many with the other actors, including Cedric Hardwicke. This is a remarkable opportunity to acquire this huge archive of extremely rare stills from this important pre-Holocaust movie! Note: We have 25 images of the English 8x10 stills in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 25 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 15. Condition: very good to fine. A few of the stills have minor wear, but overall, they are in really nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
