Frank Gelett Burgess was an artist, art critic, poet, author and humorist. An important figure in the San Francisco Bay Area literary renaissance of the 1890s, particularly through this iconoclastic little magazine, The Lark, he is best known as a writer of nonsense verse, such as "The Purple Cow", and for introducing French modern art to the United States in an essay titled The Wild Men of Paris. He was the author of the popular Goops books, and he coined the term blurb. Note that this poster was designed by Florence Lundberg but Burgess cut the block. Florence Lundberg designed and engraved the woodcuts for a number of The Lark's issues. The paper is a very interesting Bamboo fiber which was used in the Chinese drug stores in San Francisco during the period. Artist: Florence Lundborg & Gelett Burgess Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was printed on a bamboo paper that has much unevenness through it (see our image). It had tears and areas of paper loss around the edges, and small paper loss in the middle of the woman's clothing. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
