An Autographed Menu (measures 10 1/2" x 14"; 1 page) (Learn More) Universal Studios (also referred to as Universal Pictures or simply Universal) is an American film studio which was founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass, Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, Robert H. Cochrane, and Jules Brulatour. It is the oldest surviving film studio in the United States, and the world's fourth oldest after Gaumont, Pathe and Nordisk Film. It is located in Universal City, California, and is one of Hollywood's "Big Six" studios. Universal also owns several film-related theme parks and resorts, including: Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Japan and more! Important Added Info: Note that this Universal Studio Cafe menu has been personally autographed (signed) by NINE people: Lon Chaney Jr., Franklin Pangborn, Deanna Durbin, Allan Jones, Donald O'Connor, Thomas Gomez, June Vincent, Edgar Barrier, AND Maria Montez! At this time, the Universal Studio Cafe would print a new menu every single day, and this one is from Friday, June 11, 1943, during World War II. They would have tours of the studio, and those who went on the tour were given these menus. The visitors would have the opportunity to see famous stars, both in the cafe and at work on current movies. In the case of this menu, the owner of it was able to obtain the nine signatures described above on the back of the top half of the menu (the person who obtained the signatures added notes about what film individuals who signed were working on at that time, and after Lon Chaney Jr. they added "Son of Dracula"). They also noted that "Olsen & Johnson were around too", but obviously, they did not meet them to get the signatures (they did get the signature of "Harry Close", noted as "policeman guard guide", so they were likely just being nice in having him sign!). The notation "U.S.O. matrons: Palmer & White" is at the bottom of the signatures, so this was almost surely a tour for visiting G.I.s, on leave from World War II. Note that our consignor purchased this from a major book seller who was selling the collection of a major book and autograph collector, and while he does not have a certificate of authenticity, we feel certain these autographs are authentic. Condition: very good. The menu was folded several times, but is otherwise in pretty nice condition (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
