They fight evil with the aid of rings that grant them a variety of extraordinary powers, all of which come from imagination, fearlessness, and willpower. The characters are typically depicted as members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic law enforcement agency. The first Green Lantern (the Golden Age Green Lantern) was created in 1940 by Martin Nodell with scripting or co-scripting of the first stories by Bill Finger. In 1959, John Broome and Gil Kane created the Silver Age Green Lantern. In 1971, Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams created the Bronze Age Green Lantern, who was a black African American. And there have been others! Green Arrow shows Green Lantern the plight of the people living in the tenements of slumlord Jubal Slade, but when the Guardians of the Universe observe Green Lantern roughing up Slade, they bring him to Oa and reprimand him. Against their orders Green Lantern returns to Earth and collects evidence to put Slade away. In response, the Guardians contact Green Lantern, but Green Arrow argues that there are serious problems across America that have escaped the attention of Green Lantern, the Guardians confer, and decide to send a representative to accompany the two heroes as they go on a journey of discovery.
