Date Sold 12/12/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Autographed Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Ernest Hemingway's To Have and Have Not, the classic 1944 Howard Hawks World War II (WWII) romantic suspense melodrama ("Humphrey Bogart... with his kind of woman in a powerful adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's most daring man-woman story!"; very loosely adapted from the classic story by Ernest Hemingway, "Screen Play by Jules Furthman and William Faulkner"; "If you want anything mister, ...just whistle!"; "It happens this way.."; "In love with his kind of woman!"; this was the movie where middle-aged Humphrey Bogart met 19 year old Lauren Bacall, and won her romantically, both on and off the screen) starring Humphrey Bogart, Walter Brennan, Lauren Bacall (in her very first movie role!), Hoagy Carmichael, Sheldon Leonard, Dan Seymour, Dolores Moran, Marcel Dalio, and Walter Sande. Note that this movie was not very faithful to Ernest Hemingway's story. Just six years later, Warner Bros. remade the movie with John Garfield and Patricia Neal, and this time they were more faithful to the story. Finally, note that there is a story that has circulated for many decades that male singer Andy Williams dubbed Lauren Bacall's voice for her song in this movie! Many people say this is absolutely an urban legend, and that Williams did record the song, but Howard Hawks decided to go with Lauren Bacall's version instead, and Bacall herself said it was definitely her singing, but there is no stopping an urban legend! Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this insert, and that was 21 years ago, when it sold for $1,265! Note that this poster has a large studio-issued corrective credits snipe glued over the entire credits area below the title. We found another images of a different insert (and we also know this from the one-sheet, which is a similar situation) that ALL of the posters apparently were printed with credits one way, and then were quickly sniped by the studio before they were distributed. What was the change? In the printed poster, Howard Hawks' credit is around the same size as the actors, but in the snipe, his name is now FAR larger! This might have been the result of an error on the studio's part, or he might have had a contract that guaranteed him giant billing. In any event, it seems extremely likely that all posters have these snipes, unless of course, someone has a restorer remove it. In the case of this poster, Lauren Bacall signed in the credits area, so it is on the snipe, so of course, one would not want to remove the snipe! Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by Lauren Bacall! Our consignor is a longtime collector who purchased this signed item from a reputable dealer. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to surely be authentic. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good. The poster had separation on parts of the folds and someone put clear tape on the back of most of each fold, and performed slight amateur restoration to the front of the folds, where there was fine surface paper loss. The poster also has many tiny pinholes around the edges, along with some smudges and stains. It has a 1" tear in the lower right border and stains on the snipe, surely caused by the glue used. It had a stain in the center of the snipe, and someone performed slight amateur restoration to that area. In spite of the above defects, the poster can still be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or certainly, one could choose to have restoration performed (but if so, they must caution the restorer to be extra careful about the autograph, and to protect it during the restoration process).
