An Original Vintage Paperbacked World War I Poster (measures 29 1/2" x 40" [75 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) Rally Round the Flag With United States Marines, the 1916 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster ("'Soldiers of the sea'"; "Your country needs you!"; "Now's the time to enlist!"; "First in defense on land or sea."; "Apply today") encouraging men to join the military, and featuring Sidney H. Riesenberg of a Marine landing party with a battleship in the background. Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! Artist: Sidney H. Riesenberg Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this unusual World War I poster. It is printed on a fairly heavy paper stock, while most World War I posters of this size were printed on thin poster paper. It is one of three similar posters that we were consigned, which we are auctioning in three separate auctions. All three were mounted to a paper backing many years ago, but only the slightest of restoration was performed (it was obviously done primarily to conserve the poster). We have never auctioned any of the three before, and may well never auction any of them again, because they are surely incredibly rare! Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. As noted above, someone mounted the poster onto a paper backing, but primarily for preservation reasons. The poster was folded once in each direction, and there are rough creases and surface paper loss on the horizontal fold, and a much lesser amount of wear on the vertical fold. It has creases below the crossfold in the soldier's pants. It has a diamond-shaped area of creases at the crossfold and it has some smudges and scuffs scattered in the white background areas. The poster can be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or certainly, restoration could be performed. Either way, the new owner of this poster will have a wonderful early Marines poster to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
