Date Sold 8/23/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. a lot of 11 deluxe stills (8 measure 7" x 9" and 3 measure 8" x 10")from Merry Wives of Reno, the 1934 H. Bruce Humberstone Nevada romantic divorce comedy (about three couples on a train who interact in amusing ways, but then, thanks to misunderstandings, they end up all deciding to go to Reno and get divorced, and once there, they are not sure they made the right decision!) starring Margaret Lindsay, Donald Woods, Guy Kibbee, Glenda Farrell, Hugh Herbert, Frank McHugh, and Ruth Donnelly. Note that this movie preceded the classic 1939 movie "The Women" by five years, but it covers quite a bit of the same ground, and both are set in the days when people had to go to Reno, Nevada to get a "no fault" divorce, and they had to stay there for a period of time! Measurements: from 7" x 9" to 8" x 10"Note that this lot and 21 others we are currently auctioning, were owned by director H. Bruce Humberstone (nicknamed "Lucky"). He was born in 1901 and he started as a juvenile actor, and in his teens, he became a script clerk, and then worked his way up to being an assistant director to many top directors, including King Vidor. In 1932, he directed his first movie, and he worked steadily through the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, directing one last movie in 1961. He directed both "A" and "B" movies, including some Tarzan, Charlie Chan, Cisco Kid, and more, and some of his movies have cult status, including "I Wake Up Screaming"! The 22 lots we are currently auctioning include a large number of stills (many of them key books and some include lots of incredible candids showing Humberstone) from movies that he either directed or was the assistant director on, and there are also some non-still items as well, including his personal phone/address book, which had the phone numbers of all the top stars of that time! This is a rare opportunity to obtain large numbers of guaranteed original stills and other items from Humberstone movies that were the property of the man himself! Condition: fine. 8 of the 11 stills were created with a "scalloped" edge, but this was intentional, because it was considered artistic. The stills were stored in a brown folder since they were created, and as noted above, these were director Humberstone's personal stills, and they are in remarkable condition! We still have the brown folder, but it has no printing connected to the movie on it (but someone hand wrote the name of the movie and the stars), and it has darkened with age. If the high bidder on these photos wants it, they could have it, but we can't see that it has any value other than that it lends even more authenticity to the stills being from when the movie was first made. In addition, the folder measures 9 1/2" x 12", so sending it would make for a larger package. Unless the high bidder tells us that they want the folder sent, we will discard it.
