An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Mexican Movie Poster (measures 27" x 37") (Learn More) Fando y Lis (released in the U.S. in 1970 as "Fando and Lis: Tar Babies"), the 1968 Alejandro Jodorowsky Mexican surreal fantasy horror melodrama (set in a post apocalyptic future, about a mentally disturbed man who is accompanied by a physically disabled woman, and the two are in search of a mystical land called "Tar", where all their infirmities will be magically cured, and on their journey they encounter many strange people, and the man abandons the woman multiple times, only to keep returning to her) starring Sergio Kleiner (in the title role as Fando), Diana Mariscal (in the title role as Lis), Maria Teresa Rivas, Tamara Garina, Juan Jose Arreola, and Rene Rebetez. Note that this was director Jodorowsky's very first movie. He based it on a play he had seen many years before and only had slight memories of, and he wrote a single page "screenplay". Like all his later movies, it is completely surreal, and for many people, extremely disturbing. It opened at the Acapulco Film Festival in Mexico, and supposedly there was riot afterwards, and Jodorowsky barely made it away in his car, with a crowd throwing rocks at it! Two years later, he made "El Topo", which provoked an even more extreme reaction, and became a "cult classic", but this movie was largely forgotten until 2000, when it was finally released on DVD, and people got a chance to see it, and not surprisingly, the reactions to it have been very mixed! The movie premiered at the Acapulco Film Festival in Mexico in 1968, but it did not have its regular Mexican release until 1972 (and by that time, there had been a U.S. release in 1970, but it was probably in "arthouses" only). Poster material of any kind from this first movie is extremely rare, and we have only auctioned a few Mexican and Italian posters. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is a rare "country of origin" poster for this Mexican movie! Note that this Mexican poster measures 27" x 37" and is folded. Condition: good.
