An Encapsulated Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook Supplement (pb supplement; measures 12" x 18 1/2" [30 x 47 cm]; 13 pages) (Learn More) The Phantom of the Opera, the classic 1925 Rupert Julian Universal silent Paris France opera house murder mystery horror thriller ("Carl Laemmle presents Gaston Leroux's magnificent story of Parisian gaiety and intrigue"; "Weird! Wild! Wonderful!"; from the novel by Gaston Leroux, which was published in a serialized format in 1909 and 1910) starring Lon Chaney Sr. (in the title role as Erik, The Phantom), Norman Kerry (as Vicomte Raoul de Chagny), Mary Philbin (as Christine Daae), Arthur Edmund Carewe (as Ledoux), Gibson Gowland (as Simon Buquet), Carla Laemmle (uncredited as one of the ballerinas), Alexander Bevani, and "5000 others". Note that this movie was remade in 1943 with Claude Rains as the Phantom and Susannah Foster as Christine. In 1986, Andrew Lloyd Webber made a musical stage play version, which is perhaps the most successful stage play of all time, and is still running on Broadway! In 2004, Webber's musical was made into a movie, with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum. Also note that as they did with many of their major productions at this time, Universal created two completely different sets of lobby cards, with different designs and two title cards, so there are sixteen first release cards, two sets of eight. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned an example of this really cool pressbook supplement, and we have also never auctioned an example of the pressbook from this movie! What is so interesting about this is not only the content (loads of images and text, which has likely never been seen since 1925), but it also incorporates the exact concept of a "teaser" campaign that didn't come into common practice for several decades after. Theaters were supposed to use ads in this starting two weeks before they got this movie, and then there are others to be used during those two weeks, and finally ones to be used when it opened. Obviously, Universal knew this would be a gigantic success, and they created this elaborate campaign for the theaters who showed this movie. Note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of the supplement, plus an image of an inside spread, but of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire supplement we are selling. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS SOLELY A SUPPLEMENT AND NOT AN ENTIRE PRESSBOOK! Condition: good to very good. The pages are somewhat fragile and have darkened somewhat. There is small paper loss in the top of the cover in the blank border only, and the pages after the first four have a small tear in the bottom that grows increasingly longer until the five six pages have paper loss at the bottom, but it is completely in the blank area. This rare supplement must be handled carefully, and the previous owner separated the pages and then put each into a mylar sleeve, which protects it wonderfully, and yet you can still see every page.
