An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 28" x 33 3/4") (Learn More) Joe Walsh's Brown Derby Minstrels, the circa 1920s poster advertising a touring black African American group of minstrel musicians, who put on a minstrel show that likely included music and other forms of prepared skits and scenes, appearing in Ohio ("Columbia Theatre Alliance 4 Days Com. Sunday Mat. Sept. 2 Street parade at noon - Mon. & Tues. Palace Theatre Ashland, O."). Note that a perpetual calendar shows that "Sunday, September 2" fell in 1900, 1906, 1917, 1923, 1928, and 1934. Based on the style and quality of the printing of the three different posters we have discovered from this show, we think it is likely that it is from the 1910s or 1920s, meaning they would date from between 1917 and 1928, but we have been unable to find ANY additional information about this performing group. If anyone knows more about this poster or "Joe Walsh's Brown Derby Minstrels", please email us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this one-sheet has a great artwork image of a man (almost certainly "Joe Walsh", although we can find no information about him), along with seven artwork images of black minstrels (one is almost completely concealed, but he is on his knees gambling at craps with a pair of dice). One of the minstrels is playing a banjo, one is playing a trombone, one is singing, one is smoking a cigar, one is sitting in a chair in evening clothes, and there is an "Aunt Jemima"-looking lady. Condition: good. This one-sheet was discovered along with another example of the same poster, which we auctioned on 12/18/07 (it sold for $736.99). The other example of the poster was in better condition than this one was. Like this poster, the top was trimmed, but then it was glued back on to the bottom section, with the writing area covered over (they did that because the show was not playing at the place and times indicated on the poster). In the case of THIS poster, they found a different solution. They trimmed off the top title area, and then trimmed off the theater name and play dates area underneath it, and then took a new piece of paper, and printed it with the correct theater name and location, and taped that in between the top and bottom section. Apparently, they must have done this with a bunch of one-sheets (which only makes sense, for they were likely pasted up all over that area of Ohio), and they put a top section on this poster which has a different color border from the bottom section, meaning it is likely that parts of two different one-sheets were used. The large bottom section of the poster contains all of the artwork from the poster, and it is in pretty nice condition. The top title area is missing the top left corner, extending into the edge of the borders. If I owned this poster, I would likely take out the small middle section (with "PALACE Theatre" on it), and simply have the top and bottom pieces linenbacked together, and the resulting poster will look fantastic, and there will be virtually no restoration needed in the bottom section!
