Date Sold 4/17/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at the Race Track, the 1936 H. Bruce Humberstone Asian detective horse racing sports gambling mystery crime thriller ("Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers") starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Helen Wood, Thomas Beck, Alan Dinehart, Gavin Muir, Jonathan Hale, and Sam Flint. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that any posters from this movie are incredibly rare! In all our years of auctioning, we have only auctioned a single one-sheet (23 years ago for an astonishing $23,575, likely the highest price ever paid for a Charlie Chan poster!), and NO other posters (only stills and lobby cards). And of course, ANY posters larger than a one-sheet for any of the early Charlie Chan movies are beyond rare, and there are only a tiny number of three-sheets or six-sheets for any of the Fox Charlie Chan movies! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had darkened somewhat, except for a few areas in the borders where there was likely once tape. There was paper loss in the top horizontal fold in the right two crossfolds, but not in the one in Oland's face. There were some pieces of tape on the back of parts of several folds and some smudges and stains scattered on the folds in the area of the title, with tears and paper loss around the edges of the poster, and there was once tape in those areas. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was linenbacked many years ago onto a thin linen with no excess, and only slight restoration. In the years since, the back of the linen has become unevenly darkened. If I owned this incredibly rare poster, I would have it removed from the old linen and re-backed by a top professional, and afterwards, it will display wonderfully!
