An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) Each Dawn I Die, the 1939 William Keighley newspaper journalism jail prison convict crime thriller ("From a Novel by Jerome Odlum"; James Cagney is a crusading journalist who ends up in jail with hardened convict George Raft) starring James Cagney, George Raft, Jane Bryan, George Bancroft, Maxie 'Slapsie Maxie' Rosenbloom, Stanley Ridges, Victor Jory, Emma Dunn, Edward Pawley, and Willard Robertson NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and it had defects which were repaired during the linenbacking process (which we describe below, as well as the quality of the restoration, if I thought there was something about the restoration worth commenting on!). You should also look at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). the poster had small holes at the crossfolds and small tears and some small areas of paper loss down the vertical foldline; there were small tears and creases along the horizontal foldlines. The poster had missing pieces and tears in the blank borders, and the person who did the restoration put new blank white paper over all the borders to even out the appearance (but the small writing at the bottom of the poster was not covered over). This is a common technique used by several top restorers. It is done so well that the majority of collectors are not even aware it has been done, and many do not feel it to be a significant detraction (since it is only blank white area). Note that this poster has an unusual design element where Cagney's credit extends into the blank border (something that is almost never done in movie posters). When the restorer put new paper on that border, he was extremely careful to not touch that part of Cagney's credit! Learn More about condition grades
