An Original Vintage Folded World War I Poster (measures 20 1/2" x 27 1/2" [52 x 70 cm]) (Learn More) Cardinal Mercier, the 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) Home Front poster ("Cardinal Mercier has appealed to the Food Administration for more food for starving millions. Eat less wheat-meat-fats and sugar. Ship more to the war-stricken people of France- Belgium- Italy") requesting that people eat less and ship more to the war-torn countries in Europe, and featuring George Illion art of the famous Catholic cardinal. Note that Cardinal Mercier was a Belgian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church and is well-remembered for his staunch resistance to the German occupation of Belgium from 1914 to 1918. After the invasion, he distributed a strong pastoral letter, Patriotism and Endurance, to be read in all his churches, urging the people to keep up their spirits. Artist: George Illion Important Added Info: Note that this is one of a remarkable group of around 100 guaranteed authentic mostly war posters (around 75 war posters, plus 25 others, including political ones) mostly dating from before 1900 through 1945, with 15 from after that date! These were originally acquired by an archive decades ago, and they have been in storage ever since, until they were recently consigned to us. Many of these are the sorts of posters that you can find reproductions of on the Internet, but finding guaranteed originals like these is incredibly difficult (years can go by before these are offered for sale or at auction). This is a very rare opportunity to purchase any of these more than 100 posters! Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good to very good. The poster was originally folded and someone mounted it onto a very thin linen, with no excess. Either before or after it was backed, it acquired faint smudges in the white background area and creases around the edges, but is otherwise in pretty good condition, especially considering its age.
