R39 Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Half-Sheet Movie Poster (measures approximately 20" x 26") (Learn More) Of Human Bondage, the classic 1934 John Cromwell man-obsessed-with-trashy-woman-who-treats-him-as-badly-as-anyone-has-ever-been-treated romantic melodrama ("The love that lifted a man to paradise.. and hurled him back to earth [sic] again!"; "From the novel by W. Somerset Maugham"; "W. Somerset Maugham's world famous novel") starring Leslie Howard (as Philip Carey), Bette Davis (note that because Bette Davis was a Warner Bros star, and because she was "loaned" to RKO to make the movie, Warner executives saw to it that she wasn't even nominated for the Best Actress Oscar [for the only time in Oscar history, there was a major effort to have her still win by being a "write-in" candidate, but that failed, which was likely the greatest travesty in the history of the Academy Awards!]; as so often happens, Davis was given the Best Actress Oscar the following year for Dangerous, as a "consolation" prize for being robbed the year before!; as Mildred), Frances Dee, Kay Johnson, Reginald Denny, Alan Hale Sr., and Reginald Owen. Note that this movie was remade twice, in 1946 with Eleanor Parker and in 1964 with Kim Novak, and while both those actresses did excellent jobs, Davis' performance remains the definitive one! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: This poster has been professionally linenbacked. It now looks great, and most dealers would describe it as "fine (or mint) on linen". We have noted the defects that were restored below (and feel everyone should always do this!). Many collectors would not be aware of the restoration this poster has had unless it was specifically shown to them! Condition: good. This poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. It appears to have had the following defects: someone trimmed all of the blank borders from the poster (approximately 1" on all sides). Also missing is a tiny bit of the lower right corner and a small bit of the top of the right border. The poster had been roughly folded and there are creases along both folds. There also was a diagonal crease in the top right corner and creases and tears in the top center of the poster and the bottom center of the poster. There was a 2" crease going through the "IS" of "DAVIS". The poster is in better condition than the above makes it sound! The figure of Bette Davis and the figure of Leslie Howard are mostly undamaged (except for the fold that goes through each), and the poster visually looks quite nice, as the creases and tears were greatly minimized during linenbacking.
