The Palais Garnier (also known as Opera Garnier) is an opera house in Paris, France. It was built for the Paris Opera from 1861 to 1875 at the behest of Emperor Napoleon III. It was the primary theatre of the Paris Opera and its associated Paris Opera Ballet until 1989, when a new opera house opened, and the company now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet. The theatre has been an official French historic monument since 1923.
Artist: d'apres Marc Chagall
Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned one example of this poster before and it sold for $626 and that poster was in "good to very good" condition, and this one is in excellent condition! Marc Chagall was commissioned to redo the ceiling of the Paris Opera in 1963. The opera house also asked Chagall to design a limited edition poster for the ceiling's debut. The artist based this poster on a portion of the mural featuring Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. We are guessing that the "d'apres" at lower left may just be because this is based on part of his actual ceiling art. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: very good to fine. The poster has never been folded and it is in pretty nice condition!
