Date Sold 5/1/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan's Courage, the 1934 Eugene Forde & George Hadden detective mystery crime thriller ("Words of wisdom his only weapons!"; "Based on novel 'The Chinese Parrot,' by Earl Derr Biggers", which had been the source novel of the 1927 Paul Leni silent Chan movie of that name, and this was a sound remake with a different actor in the lead role) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Drue Leyton, Donald Woods, Murray Kinnell, and Paul Harvey. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that first release movie paper from this title has always been extremely scarce. In the past, we have auctioned a Leader Press one-sheet (and that was 15 years ago), and a single cut pressbook, but other than those, we never had any movie posters or lobby cards, until we were consigned this lobby card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: very good. The card was "starch backed", which means that it was moistened with a special starch solution, attached to a backing, allowed to dry, and then the card had touch up while it was backed, and afterward, the backing was removed. The card had pinholes in the corners, with tiny paper loss in the right blank corners, and some tiny bits of paper loss in the top of the top blank border. It had a tear and a few stains in the top left corner in the background area. Overall, the card was in "good to very good" condition prior to restoration. The card was starch backed by a talented professional and expert restoration was performed to the above defects. The card looks fantastic, and it has only had the restoration to the defects described above, and best of all, it still completely looks and feels like an unrestored lobby card!
