An Original Vintage Deluxe 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Stage Play Still (Learn More) Petrified Forest, the 1935 Broadway stage play production (based on the work by Robert E. Sherwood) starring Leslie Howard, John Alexander, Humphrey Bogart, Milo Boulton, Charles Dow Clark, and Peggy Conklin. Note that Humphrey Bogart had begun acting on the stage in the 1920s, but to no real success. In 1930 he got a Hollywood contract at Fox Pictures, but he had little success there, and they released him after two years. He returned to the stage, and in 1936 finally was noticed in the small but vital role in the stage production of this classic play, where he appeared with Leslie Howard. Howard was signed for the movie version of the play, and he insisted, over studio objections, that Bogart be cast as well (he sent a telegram to Warners that read "No Bogart, no Howard"). Bogart never forgot this great kindness, and he much later named his daughter "Leslie". NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this is a deluxe stage play still, which is printed on double weight paper stock, is from the original Broadway production of this play from 1935. The following year, it was made into a movie (see above for more on this). We have previously auctioned two stage play stills from this Broadway production, but neither of those showed Bogart, and otherwise, we have only auctioned playbills.
