Stalker, the 1979 Andrej Tarkovsky Russian metaphysical science fiction (sci-fi) fantasy mystery thriller (about a hired guide called a Stalker who takes a writer and a scientist on a journey into a forbidden Zone where a meteorite had landed years earlier, and where a Room supposedly exists that can fulfill ones deepest desires) starring Aleksandr Kajdanovsky, Alisa Frejndlikh, Anatoli Solonitsyn, Nikolai Grinko, Natasha Abramova, and Faime Jurno. Note that the working title of the film was "The Wish Machine" and it was adapted from the science-fiction novel "The Roadside Picnic", and based on a script by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. This was Tarkovsky's final Soviet feature. Due to the type of Kodak film used, most of the original film was rendered useless during developing, as the lab was unfamiliar with how to process it and most of the film had to be shot a second time. It was filmed in and around abandoned chemical/electrical power plants that were likely the cause of allergic reactions from the crew, and death from bronchial cancer of the director, his wife and the lead actor
