A Linenbacked German Special Poster (measures 27" x 46 3/4" [69 x 119 cm]) (Learn More) Deutsche Werkstatten (literally translates to "German Workshops"), the 1910s German poster promoting a trade show exhibition (of furnishings, fabrics, and toys) which was held at the Arco-Zinneberg palace in Munich, Germany. Deutsche Werkstatten was (and is) one of the leading manufacturers of the German Arts and Crafts movement. Note that this poster features art by Lucian Bernhard. Bernhard was a German graphic designer, type designer, professor, interior designer, and artist during the first half of the twentieth century. Bernhard was very influential in both the United States and Europe (he emigrated from Berlin to America in 1923). His advertising work amassed a client list that included Cat's Paw, Westinghouse, ExLax, Bosch, Manoli, Priester, Adler, Amoco and Grand Rapids Furniture Company. In a time when a great deal of theory was developing behind the fields of graphic design and advertising, Bernhard worked almost entirely by instinct, saying "You see with your eyes, not your brain". Although he favored classic book typefaces for setting text, he developed a number of display typefaces, often keeping his namesake, including Bernhard Gothic, Bernhard Fashion, Lucian, Bernhard Tango and Bernhard Brushscript. Artist: Lucian Bernhard Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good to fine. The poster was never folded. It had some minor border defects, including some creases and faint smudges, but otherwise was in really nice condition prior to linenbacking. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
