A Vintage Softcover Book (measures 11" x 17" [28 x 43 cm]; 32 pages) (Learn More)

The Official Marvel Comics Try-Out, the 1983 Jim Shooter Marvel illustrated book which includes examples and information about coloring, inking, lettering, scripting, penciling, and plotting comic art. Note that the cover includes John Romita Jr. and Al Milgrom art of Spider-man and Doc Ock showing various stages of comic book creation, from pencils, to inks, to colors. Actually, the purpose of the book was to let Marvel find new scripters, inkers, pencilers, colorists, or letterers! There were many pages in the book that were incomplete, where the person who owned the book would have the chance to do any of the above tasks on those pages, and the idea was that once they were done, they would send the book to Jim Shooter at Marvel, and they would evaluate it and potentially hire people who did a good job! And they told you that you had to enclose return postage if you wanted your book back, or else they would throw them away. They also said that they would not give any help or advice, just a "polite 'no thank you'" if they didn't want to hire you. We wonder how this wacky book worked out, and if Marvel hired people out of it, and how many they sold at the $12.95 cover price!
