Jon Robert Shaps lived every star struck movie fan's dream. In the late 1970s
he began taking photos of celebrities at movie premieres (and anywhere else he
could encounter them), and he started selling them to The Daily News newspaper,
The National Enquirer, The Star, and other similar magazines. He loved his
work, and spent all his time at it, and was so successful that he was hired by
the New York Post, and given press credentials, which gained him entry into
every sort of celebrity event, and he went to every one he possibly could!
He would often ask the celebrities if he could have his picture taken with
them, and he wanted additional mementos of his encounters, so he went to
memorabilia shops in the 1970s and 1980s and purchased vintage posters, lobby
cards, or stills (and repros if that was all he could get) of celebrities he
knew he would be seeing, and he would bring those and ask the celebrities to
sign them, which they often did (it likely helped that Mr. Shaps was of small
stature and looked "like a kid", and I can't imagine many people refusing his
requests!).
By the late 1980s, he had accumulated a large collection of autographed items,
the vast majority of which he had acquired in person. He had a window card from
"A Hard Day's Night" which he was able to get signed by Paul McCartney, Ringo
Starr, and George Harrison, but he was unable to get John Lennon's autograph,
so he purchased an index card with Lennon's signature, and had the window card
and index card framed together, and he displayed that on the wall of his New
York apartment, along with some of his other most prized autographed items.
Sadly, Mr. Shaps died in an accident in 1990, and his collection passed to his
brother, Michael. Michael took the items to a well known memorabilia dealer,
Rudy Franchi, in 1991, and Mr. Franchi provided him with a written appraisal of
the value of the items. But Mr. Shaps did not want to sell the items so soon
after his brother's passing.
Now, 22 years later, eMoviePoster.com is offering the Jon Robert Shaps
autograph collection at auction! Not only is this collection of 57 items
(mostly movie-related, but other items as well) filled with wonderful iconic
autographs from a variety of subjects (reflecting Jon Shaps love of all things
entertainment related), but also he was in a very privileged position to meet
so many celebrities personally, and it is rare that one gets an opportunity to
purchase signed items directly from the estate of the person who acquired them.
The phrase "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" is certainly overused, but it seems
to be very appropriate in the case of the auction of these 57 items, and we
certainly hope all collectors of autographed material will pay close attention
to not only these 57 items, but also the other 794 autographed items as well!
Below are 29 photos of Mr. Shaps with some of the hundreds of celebrities he
photographed during his career, as well as an image of the appraisal provided
for these items by Mr. Franchi in 1991. Click on any image below to see bigger versions of each.
