ANG LEE

Ang Lee was born in Taiwan in 1954. I have not seen "Rui shoi" ("Pushing Hands") his first film from 1992, but I did see his The Wedding Banquet the following year, and found it a remarkable movie (not just from a new director, but from any director!), as was his Eat Drink Man Woman the next year. Along with everyone else, I wondered whether Lee, though great at making these movies, could make some other kind of movie, and he next took on the unusual project of Sense and Sensibility, based on the Jane Austin novel, and I thought it excellent. He has slowed down slightly from his early pace of a movie a year, with a film every two years or so the past few years, and he keeps widening his range. Some of his movies include: The Ice Storm, Ride With the Devil, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hulk, Brokeback Mountain (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film), The Life Of Pi (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film). He is the epitome of all a director can and should be, someone who tries to create a masterpiece every time out, and I very much look forward to each of his new movies when they open!
