GITTA ALPAR
Gitta Alpar (born Regina Klopfer) was a Hungarian Jewish opera singer who first appeared in 1923 at the age of 20. She had great success over the 1920s, and she married actor Gustav Frohlich (one of the stars of Metropolis), but in 1935, her marriage was dissolved by the government as "illegal" because she was Jewish and Frohlich was not, and she was put on "Hitler's hit list" along with other top Jewish celebrities who left Germany, and she went to Austria and then Hungary, and then England. She then went to the U.S. and continued her singing career. She passed away in 1991 at the age of 88.
