JACK JOHNSON
John Arthur 'Jack' Johnson, also known as the Galveston Giant, was a black African American heavyweight boxer from the 1890s until his final ring appearance in 1945 (for a U.S. War Bond benefit). Johnson won the heavyweight championship of the world in 1908, becoming the first African American champion, losing it in 1915 to Jess Willard. Johnson had an incredible 73 wins in his boxing career, with 40 being by knockout! Johnson passed away in 1946 at the age of 68.
