Marcel Marceau was a French actor and mime from the 1940s to the 2000s. He referred to mime as the "art of silence", and he performed professionally worldwide for over 60 years, often as his stage persona "Bip the Clown". He was active in World War II as a French Resistance fighter, and said the first time he mimed was to keep Jewish children quiet while he helped them escape to neutral Switzerland. Some of his movies include: Shanks (in his film debut as a deaf mute puppeteer who has no speaking lines), Barbarella, Silent Movie (he speaks the only lines in the movie!), and Joseph's Gift. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 84.
