Carl Hubbell was a major league baseball player from the 1920s to the 1940s, playing exclusively for the New York Giants. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. He is perhaps best remembered for his performance in the 1934 All-Star game, when he struck out in succession five of the game's great hitters: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. He was nicknamed both "King Karl" and "The Meal Ticket" (an ancient idiom meaning someone you could always count on). He passed away in 1988 at the age of 85.
