Nelson A. Rockefeller (one of the sons of John Rockefeller, the famous oil man and founder of Standard Oil) was a businessman and politician from the 1930s to 1979. He served as the Governor of New York from 1959 to 1973. Rockefeller could well have been one of the United States Presidents! What do we mean? In 1968, Robert Kennedy was almost a certainty to become the Democratic presidential candidate, and the Republican party did not want a repeat of the 1960 election, with another "Kennedy/Nixon" election, fearing that Nixon would surely lose to the charismatic Bobby Kennedy, and so many within the Republican party were strongly advocating Nelson Rockefeller as the Republican candidate, but then Bobby Kennedy was assassinated, and it then became far more reasonable for Nixon to be nominated, and he was, and he became President, and Rockefeller never got to run as the Republican candidate. However, in 1974, he served as Vice President of the United States under President Gerald Ford. Rockefeller passed away in 1979 at the age of 70.
