JOHN J. PERSHING
John J. Pershing (often known as 'Black Jack' Pershing) was a General in the United States Army from 1905 to 1924. In 1919, in recognition of his distinguished service during World War I, he was promoted to General of the Armies of the United States which was the highest rank possible for the U.S. armed forces and a position that was created for him. He passed away in 1948 at the age of 87.
