An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 12" x 18" [30 x 46 cm]) (Learn More) The Bar Sinister (also known as "The Golden Woman"), the 1917 Edgar Lewis silent black African American racism kidnapping revenge melodrama ("I am a Negress"; based on a story "by Anthony P. Kelly"; one of those wild "they don't make 'em like this anymore" movies from long ago!; the plot concerns a black woman whose husband was killed by his cruel white employer, and in revenge she kidnaps the white man's daughter and raises her as her own daughter, telling her she is half black; when the girl grows up, she falls in love with a man who hates blacks, and she hides from him that she is half black, and he finds out and is furious, but finally, her "mother" confesses to her that she is actually not black at all, at which point her boyfriend forgives her!) starring Preston Rollow, Mary Doyle, William Anderson, Florence St. Leonard, and Hedda Nova If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we previously auctioned this window card in 2010, and the person who purchased it then has reconsigned it. Other than that window card and a single lobby card, we have never auctioned any other movie paper from this important early black African American movie. Note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 12" x 18" [30 x 46 cm]. Also note that this window card was never folded. Often window cards would be folded across the middle, because that would make them 11" x 14", and they could then be sent with standard folded posters. Most collectors put an added value on a window card that has never been folded. Condition: fair. The card was trimmed on three sides, likely to fit a frame, but it is extremely fortunate that the trimming has almost no effect on the image or credits (I have never seen a complete card, and don't know that one exists, so I can't say for certain if the trimming affected any writing, but it does not appear that it did). It seems likely that it is solely background area on each of the three sides that was affected, along with a blank top. The back of the card has darkened somewhat. There are some areas of surface paper loss around the edges of the card and surface paper loss in the girl's upper lip, and some faint staining in her mouth beneath it. Still, the card can be enjoyed just as it is, or certainly a restorer could do any degree of restoration to the card. Learn More about condition grades
