An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style B One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28" x 42 3/4" [71 x 109 cm]) (Learn More) The Race, the 1916 George Melford silent sports car automobile racing romantic melodrama ("The great automobile photoplay"; "Grace gets out of another bad place"; "By Hector Turnbull and Clinton H. Stagg"; about a rich man's son who is disinherited, and he gets a job in a garage, and he meets a pretty female chauffeur, and he and the girl's father invent a revolutionary new engine, but it gets him deep in debt, and he can't sell the engines until the patent comes through, so he enters a cross country car race to win enough money to pay his debts, but his girlfriend enters it too, and they race across the country against each other, and near the finish, the young man finds out his girl's father is also deep in debt, so he lets her win, and is arrested for his debts, but just then, his patent comes through, and all is well!) starring Victor Moore, Anita King, Robert N. Bradbury, William Dale, and Mrs. Lewis McCord. Note that this movie is loosely based on Anita King's real-life transcontinental trip. She set out from Los Angeles, California to be the first woman to cross the continent alone. The trip was much publicized and she had many stops on her way to New York. She completed her trip 49 days after she started, and soon (likely because of the free publicity) production on The Race began. You can read more about the trip at this link and this link. Also, note that male lead Victor Moore is a fascinating figure in motion picture history. He played old men in the 1930s, and it is strange to see him as the young leading man in this movie, but of course, this was made decades earlier! Please click on his name to read more about his fascinating life. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that first release 1916 movie paper from this movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned a single movie paper item from this movie until we received this one-sheet! Not only that, but early car racing movie paper is also beyond rare! We know that Charlie Chaplin made two shorts in 1914 that relate to car racing, but we doubt that any first release movie paper exists on either, and this is the earliest car racing movie poster we have ever auctioned, and not only that, it has a wonderful close image of Anita King behind the wheel of a race car during a race! Also note that in the case of super early movie posters like this, one might have a fear that the poster could be from an early re-release. However, the litho company logo has "Copyright 1916" printed within it, so we are certain it is the first release poster from 1916! Also note that this one-sheet measures 28" x 42 3/4" [71 x 109 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was folded in half an extra time. It had three tiny areas of paper loss in the top horizontal fold, including in the bottom of King's chin. It had very minor wear on the other folds. It had tears and paper loss in the right end of the top blank border and a small areas of paper loss in the upper left blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking (especially considering it is a century old!). The poster was nicely backed, and displays well. Learn More about condition grades
